December 3, 2010 - Mobility, Stability or Disability?

Stability can mean different things for different people.  How the body handles the forces that act on its joints is critical to safety and maximum performance.  Cumulative low-grade stress or abrupt high impact stress on joints can both lead to client injuries.  Systematic progressions based on an understanding of our stability “systems” and the mechanisms that control those systems should be the goal of every fitness professionals.  Core training alone is not the panacea it is sometimes thought to be.

December 3, 2010 - Functional Anatomy and Gait Assessment

It is one of the most basic of our functional needs and a perfect example of functional anatomy at work.  If walking is the most repeated movement we do in a day, than poor mechanics can lead to cumulative injury. Using gait observation as part of a client's assessment exposes many of the body's most fundamental muscle imbalances and biomechanical compensations.  Gait is posture in motion and a reflection of one of the body's most essential central motor programs.

Understanding that problems may be top down, bottom up or middle out will allow you to provide a more directed exercise intervention that can improve the global response of the body AND avoid reinforcing biomechanically incorrect motions.

December 4, 2010 - Corrective Exercise Programme Design and Progressions

Corrective exercise plays an integral role in the functional continuum.  Using and understanding functional anatomy and motor learning to design an appropriate corrective exercise programming maximizes your client/athlete’s movement success and reduces the risk of injury.  Corrective exercises precede more integrated exercises to cue the individual’s motor system to respond in a more desirable way and assist in removing or improving biomechanical constraints.
